One of the best ways to improve knowledge in an area is to teach the student in a hands on way, showing them techniques and letting them experience the end result first hand. Learning about our environment and creating a sustainable lifestyle is no exception.
While papers, articles and reports have some success in educating the general public, community gardens, tree planting drives and free hands on workshops are a more effective way of affecting change in a person. There is no experience like picking tomatoes that you grew from seed or watching a forest forming before your eyes, to change a persons view of the world.
Dunedin Environment Centre Trust is an organisation that runs these sorts of programmes. For more information see http://www.wiserearth.org/organization/view/6ec9ede6b86bcf33f2bd2af91c326d4c
