Outcome discussion from Sept 13 meeting of the Focus Groups Meeting This Focus Group does not yet have a convenor. Thanks to Marc Schallenberg for standing in and taking this group and coming up with the following great ideas.
RESULTS OF THE MEETING The small group in this meeting convened by Marc discussed the following 1. Sustainable Living benfits to health - - walking vs driving - growing/eating organic food - healthy lifestyle --- less medication Project Ideas discussed 1. Collect/Archive newspaper articles 2. Look into and promote ways for general practices/hospitals to operate more sustainability 3. Raising awareness for the appropriate use of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals - and their disposal MORE IDEAS NEEDED If you are interested in getting involved in one of these projects - or if you have other ideas - we'd love to hear from you. Just reply to this forum or contact the Sustainable Dunedin City Society. We are also seeking a Convenor for this group to lead the discussion and one or more projects. MY GENERAL THOUGHTS ON THIS FOCUS GROUP Sustainability is about mindfully using/borrowing our planets resources in ways that do not impair the quality of life of future generations. Respecting the needs of others is implicit in the definition of sustainability. One group of people should not benefit at the expense of others (or other species). The Natural Step has a definition of sustainability that has four strands to it - social equity is one. Being vigilent about social equity in our search for a sustainable future is increasingly important as sustainability has become a money making enterprise. For example, I read recently of carbon credits being created by a company planting trees - at the expense of a village in Africa (in Uganda I think) whose inhabitants were put off their land so that it could be converted into forest. Another reason to support local initiatives! |

Re: Outcome discussion from Sept 13 meeting of the Focus Groups Meeting Scott Willis forwarded this article from the Guardian which he and I both think is relevant to this topic.
http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/09/12/3794/ Pushing social equity seems to be tricky from within an individualistic, free market oriented society such as ours. A real challenge will be to convince our folk (NZers) that what's good for all is actually good for oneself. We will have to be careful and creative in how we attempt this. |
